{"id":5633,"date":"2026-03-19T05:11:49","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T04:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/academic-article\/alcohol-consumption-in-the-aftermath-of-a-natural-disaster-a-longitudinal-study\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T06:12:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T04:12:49","slug":"alcohol-consumption-in-the-aftermath-of-a-natural-disaster-a-longitudinal-study","status":"publish","type":"academic-article","link":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/academic-article\/alcohol-consumption-in-the-aftermath-of-a-natural-disaster-a-longitudinal-study\/","content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><html><body><p><\/p><p><strong>Study design:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Observational longitudinal study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methods:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Repatriated Norwegian adults who resided in areas affected by the 2004 Southeast Asia tsunami completed a questionnaire at 6 and 24 months postdisaster (N = 649).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Weekly alcohol consumption and frequency of intoxication did not change significantly from 6 to 24 months postdisaster at the population level: 18.3% (n = 116) increased their alcohol consumption while 21.1% (n = 125) showed a reduction. <\/p>\n<p>Increased drinking was not predicted by severity of disaster exposure, post-traumatic stress, or measures of psychological functioning. Reduced alcohol consumption was predicted by younger age and social withdrawal, but not by any of the other study variables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our findings indicate that the tsunami experience had only minor effects on alcohol consumption, in contrast to some studies suggesting a relationship between trauma exposure and increased alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"file":0,"project":[],"algolia_no_indexing":false,"boosted":0},"publication_tag":[],"topic_tax":[],"class_list":["post-5633","academic-article","type-academic-article","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/academic-article\/5633","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/academic-article"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/academic-article"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5633"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"publication_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication_tag?post=5633"},{"taxonomy":"topic_tax","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic_tax?post=5633"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
