Synne Øien Stensland<\/strong> is a Research Professor (MD, Paediatrics) and Research Director of the Section for Trauma, Disasters and Forced Migration – Children and Adolescents at the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies (NKVTS), Oslo. She also holds a senior research position at the Division of Clinical Neuroscience, Oslo University Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Stensland’s research focuses on the health impacts of violence, war, disasters, terrorism, and other traumatic events on children and adolescents, including LGBTIQ+ youth and refugees. Her work aims to advance knowledge on the experiences, reactions, needs, and recovery of trauma-exposed children, families, and marginalized groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She led the Oslo Pride Terror Study, commissioned by the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security, and is Co-Principal Investigator of the Utøya Study following the 22 July 2011 terrorist attack in Norway. She is also Principal Investigator of several other major studies, including the PATHWAYS study on childhood trauma and long-term health and the COVID Hospital Cohort Study on frontline healthcare personnel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Stensland currently heads the SHIELD consortium (Screen to Treat the Health Impact of Exposure to Life Stress and Disaster), an international research network on children affected by war and disasters, involving Ukrainian and other international partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She serves as President-Elect of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) and is widely consulted by national authorities and international partners on psychosocial response and trauma care, including work on national preparedness and responses following the 2023 mass shootings in Serbia and Prague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
