Knowledge about the unconscious scenarios that unfold between the client and the therapist is important in order to capture the things that are happening in the therapy room. In presenting fragments from one single therapy session, I want to arouse curiosity in the reader: What past experiences does this client have? Who am I to her? What kind of expectations does she have about how she will be met? What makes this particular situation (a cough attack) so difficult for her?
