Main objective

Never before in Norway has a study been done on severe traumatic head injuries in young children. . The objective of this study was to describe the presenting characteristics, type of injury and hospital course in infants and toddlers with traumatic head injuries and to identify characteristics indicating that the injury was a result of abuse.

Method

The study was based on a retrospective medical record review with an observational design of 91 children younger than 36 months of age with a traumatic head injury admitted to Ullevål University Hospital during 1995 – 2004. Inclusion criteria were children with the following diagnoses; skull fractures, intracranial hemorrhages and brain tissue injury identified by diagnostic codes in administrative discharge lists.
