Jeg ble utdannet psykolog (cand.psychol.) i 2005, og tok PhD i utviklingspsykologi i 2013, begge ved Universitet i Bergen. 

I 2013 begynte jeg som forsker II ved NKVTS, og i 2021 fikk jeg opprykk til forsker I. Jeg har også en 20% stilling som førsteamanuensis i utviklingspsykologi ved Universitetet i Oslo. Siden 2019 har jeg vært associate editor i tidsskriftet European Journal of Psychotraumatology (impact factor i 2023 var 5.783). 

Siden 2021 har jeg ledet den nasjonale implementeringen av traumefokusert kognitiv atferdsterapi (TF-CBT) i Barne- og ungdomspsykiatrisk poliklinikker (BUPer) i Norge. Omtrent 77% av BUPene kan tilby TF-CBT pr 2023. Jeg har også ledet utviklingen av en ny mobilapp til bruk sammen med TF-CBT. 

Min forskning fokuserer hovedsakelig på endringsmekanismer for psykisk helse i tilknytning til traumatiske hendelser. Jeg ser på hvorfor eksempel posttraumatisk stresslidelse (PTSD) kan oppstå, og hva vi kan gjøre for å redusere PTSD hos mennesker som ikke blir bra over tid. Jeg er interessert i tre spørsmål som utforsker dette temaet på ulike nivåer:

1) Hvilke faktorer bidrar til å beskytte mot utvikling av PTSD, og hvilke øker risikoen? En god del opplever traumatiske hendelser uten å være plaget av det i etterkant. Men mange opplever at plagene ikke slipper taket, heller ikke over tid. Informasjon om faktorer som er med på å bestemme utviklingsforløp er nyttig for å identifisere hvem som vil trenge hjelp. Spesielt ser jeg på betydningen av sosiale relasjoner for både utvikling av og bedring av PTSD.

2) Hva er mekanismene som setter i gang og opprettholder PTSD? PTSD kjennetegnes av symptomer, tanker, følelser og handlinger som kan påvirke hverandre. Det kan oppstå selvforsterkende nettverk av symptomer som for eksempel gjenopplevelser av traumet, dårlig søvn og konsentrasjonsproblemer. Jeg studerer hva som er sentrale komponenter i dette systemet, og gjennom dette kan jeg identifisere symptomer det kan være nyttig å fokusere på i behandling.

3) Hvordan kan vi fremme positive prosesser knyttet til å bli bra igjen av PTSD? Det finnes flere evidensbaserte behandlingsformer som har vist seg å ha god effekt mot PTSD. Likevel er vi ikke sikre på hva som gjør at disse behandlingsformene virker. Jeg undersøker hva som skal til for å sette i gang positive prosesser av reduksjon av PTSD-symptomer.

I tillegg er jeg også interessert i bruk av statistiske metoder som gir mulighet til å gi svar på komplekse problemstillinger, for eksempel SEM-modellering, mixed effects modeller, counterfactual-based causal mediation, og nettverksanalyser.

Tidligere har jeg også forsket på utvikling av selvfølelse blant ungdommer (PhD) og på arbeidsmiljøets betydning for mental helse etter å ha blitt utsatt for et terrorangrep på arbeidsplassen 22. juli (post.doc.).
